These are not the type of people we want doing business in the area. Current management attached to these companies have a history of breaking the rules and we cannot trust that they will follow through with any of their promises.
We need the following details:
There are no details for indigenous consultation. What has been the feedback so far for the contacted groups? (UNDRIP), emphasizing the importance of Free, Prior and Informed Consent.
The areas is currently a mixed residential and adventure tourism location. The current deforestation going on is already straining the use and enjoyment of many properties in the area. This is not an industrial site. Sand and gravel is plentiful all over the area and there are many more conveniently located pits in the area. We do not need more so close to existing residents.
Increased setback from residential properties to a minimum of 3,000m. Currently it is less than 500m.
Maps clearly show intermittent or ephemeral streams in the project area. What is their plan under the Water Sustainability Act?
This is a main watershed for a very small aquifer. How will they address the impact to home owners? There are no details on chemicals use, fuel storage and spill plans, or waste disposal.
What are the planned hours of operation.
Detailed fire smart plan due to new risk to local residential properties
What is the roadmap for a real environmental and restoration plan prior to official public engagement?
Water use and contamination study
Existing seasonal stream impacts
Endangered species impact
Detailed Land restoration plan that will return the land to 100% of its prior habitat
What are the detailed plans for noise and dust control?
Ask for a commitment to no blasting or crushing on site as part of their technical application.
What services are planned at their site? Water resources in the area are already strained.
Their technical application states 1,200,000 tonnes over 30 years. Is this for the current mining area or the total proposal mining area?
Will their application limit their use to 40,000 tonnes per year? What is the planned application amount?
Has this proposed plan been seen by the Ministry of Environment? Has a contaminated sites professional assessed the location for potential issues with leachate (particularly with wells in the area)?
There are known species at risk or critical habitat for species at risk within the project area. What are the mitigation plans?
