Deforestation/Rehabilitation
The Airy Aggregate Technical document clearly states that forestry companies have had difficulty replanting the trees. The mine will strip the top soil and then attempt to redistribute it 30 years later. With vague “habitat enhancement” stated. The earth will already be contoured from the mining efforts and the report simply states the end use will be a vague “forested wildlife habitat” . There is no environmental plan.
In reality, many quarries in BC struggle to achieve even 40% reclamation. The location may never recover.
What is proposed is significantly worse than any clear cut logging that has taken place in the area. The activity may increase the flood risk and is positioned to effect all residents downstream on the little slocan river for many years.
The location is just barely outside the ALR. Numerous streams and natural runoff is shown to pass through the proposed location. Some into ALR zones, some into existing residents properties, some into the local aquifer and into the river. Yet the technical paper states “ground water is insignificant since there are no watercourses”.

Existing Habitat
There is a lack of plan, or even identification that a plan is needed, for existing wildlife preservations.
Protected species live in the area and are protected from their nests being disturbed. These include eagles, peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons, ospreys and herons. All are known to live in the area.
Endangered species such as the Little Brown Bat are numerous in the area. The Western Screech Owl (along the river) have been studied and known to nest in the area. American Badger lives in the area. You can help by reporting any recent badger sightings to badgers.bc.ca.
